1998 Carlos Kelly McClatchy Memorial Symposium
How the Media Undermine American Democracy
James Fallows
Drue Kataoka's original sumi-e painting for the print for the 1998 Carlos Kelly McClatchy Memorial Symposium: Breaking the News: How the Media Undermine American Democracy captures the "in your face" journalism of the moment. Drue created a powerful image of a reporter brandishing a microphone in the face of the Capitol. In a clever twist of the use of negative space, the Capitol’s dome floats on top of the columnar structure foreshadowing the implied meaning of “Breaking the News.” Stanford's Department of Special Collections has archived over 20 posters of Drue's sumi-e paintings.
