Marie Baca

Marie Baca

Marie C. Baca is a writer and editor whose work is primarily focused on technology, medicine, and education. In 2006, Marie received her BA in human biology with a concentration in biotechnology and bioethics from Stanford University. She completed a tutorial at Oxford University on the philosophy of bioethics, and will receive her graduate degree in journalism from Stanford in 2010. Marie began her journalism career at Dow Jones VentureWire, where she covered the biotech beat. She then completed an internship at Stanford Magazine, an award-winning magazine published by the Stanford Alumni Association. In 2007, Marie interned at Time Inc.'s Business 2.0, penning the biotech/pharmaceutical blog "Biotechnically" and writing about innovations in biomedical technology. Later that year, Marie joined the staff of the online women's magazine SassyBean.com as executive editor. In addition to guiding the overall strategy for the publication, she managed a team of freelance writers and created a social network outreach program that quadrupled the number of unique visitors to the site. As a freelancer, Marie wrote regularly for BNET, The San Mateo Daily Journal, and Bay Area Parent Magazine, among other publications. She was most recently an assistant online editor at NBC Bay Area, managing digital content for www.nbcbayarea.com and covering local news, technology, and health. She is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
Erin Beresini

Erin Beresini

Erin Beresini graduated from Vassar College with a B.A. in French. She worked for several web startup companies in Los Angeles as a website administrator and SEO copywriter. While working for these web startups, she published articles in Triathlete and Competitor SoCal magazines. Erin's journalistic interests lie in new media platforms and magazine writing. She enjoys reporting on women's issues, endurance sports, health, environmental issues, and outdoor adventures.
Lily Bixler

Lily Bixler

Lily comes to Stanford from Scripps College where she studied English and Women and Gender Studies. While at Scripps, Lily interned with Ms. magazine, Santa Barbara Magazine and Streetwise, a small paper on the south side of Chicago ; she also has experience reporting for Palo Alto Weekly as well as papers local to Claremont, CA. More recently, Lily spent time aggregating news at Salon.com and expanding upon her interest in the Feminist Press while blogging for Broadsheet, Salon's women and politics blog. Lily enjoys traveling, running, cooking, and reading; she was born and raised in Santa Barbara, CA.
David Carini

David Carini

David comes to Stanford with three years freelance print journalism experience in numerous newspapers and magazines in San Francisco and California. Recently, he interned in the news department of the San Francisco Bay Guardian and was the associate director of a nonprofit organization. Previously, he worked at an advertising agency on the worldwide Hewlett-Packard ad campaign after graduating with a B.S. in Marketing from Bentley College.
Vanessa Castañeda

Vanessa Castañeda

Vanessa Castañeda specializes in publishing for niche audiences through the use of multiple platforms. After starting as a reporter at KVR News 9, she went on to serve as News Director at Austin's 91.7 FM. There, she developed and hosted a radio news talk show, "In The Know," which is still on the air. Since graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in broadcast journalism in 2008, she organized 3 Day Startup for 40 tech entrepreneurs as the event's communications director, produced multimedia for Rackspace Hosting's corporate communications department, as well as published content for various adventure and technology blogs. Vanessa's research interests include emerging technology influenced media adaptations and cultural influences of news perception. You can find her twittering @ohmyafly.
Stacie Chan

Stacie Chan

After completing her undergraduate degree in Communication with a minor in Spanish at Stanford, Stacie is more than ready to immerse herself in the graduate journalism program. Her past three summers were spent at various journalism organizations gaining practical experiences: local Southern California newspapers Pasadena Star News and Eastern Group Publications, Inc. (a chain of bilingual newspapers), and KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. But the sheer process of learning new skills and bolstering her journalism foundation this year is an entirely new experience that she is really looking forward to. When she's not reading the news, Stacie likes to try new ethnic cuisine, play outdoor sports poorly, shoe shop, and meet new people.
Frankie Freeman

Frankie Freeman

Frankie came to Stanford from the United Kingdom, where she received a first class honours degree in Classical Studies from the University of Manchester. As an undergraduate, she also spent one semester at the University of Melbourne and a summer at the British School at Athens. Frankie contributed to various commercial and student publications whilst at university, and served as travel editor for the Manchester-based Sanctuary newspaper. After graduating in 2008, Frankie spent several months in Africa, working as an investigative reporter at Ghanaian national newspaper The Statesman, specializing in human rights issues such as child protection and sanitation. Whilst in Ghana, Frankie also produced an online column for London-based trade magazine, Travel Weekly, and was recruited as a political analyst for the governing party's candidate during the 2008 Ghanaian presidential election. Her reports on the Ghanaian economy and political situation were widely circulated within the national press. Frankie has also gained work experience on the foreign affairs desk at The Guardian in London and was even spotted posing as a fashion journalist at British women's magazine, SHE, earlier this year. Frankie is the recipient of a 2009 BUNAC 'BEST' Scholarship, an award recognizing potential to further transatlantic understanding between the UK and the US through graduate study.
Natalie Jabbar

Natalie Jabbar

A California native, Natalie Jabbar graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University in June 2009 with a B.A. in English literature. While an undergraduate, Natalie worked for the Stanford Daily newspaper as a writer, columnist, copy editor, managing editor of opinions/editorials, and editor of the arts and entertainment section. Additionally, she has interned at the Menlo Park Almanac, the Stanford Professional Publishing Course, and Sunset magazine. As a lover of stories and long-form journalism, Natalie looks forward to developing the skills needed to keep the timeless practice of storytelling alive amidst the changing media landscape.
Tim Jaconette

Tim Jaconette

Tim Jaconette has worked in Washington D.C. as an intern for both ABCâ€(tm)s World News with Charles Gibson and the CBS network news political unit. He also was an extern at CNN in Atlanta and an intern for Fox40 News in Sacramento. As an undergraduate, Tim served as executive director, head of reporting, and as a journalist for the online student television station, CalTV. He reported for KALX radio, where he also produced an afternoon news program. Tim earned a B.A. in Political Science from UC Berkeley, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors.
Susanna Kim

Susanna Kim

Before coming to Stanford, Susanna Kim was a correspondent with the Community Newspaper Company in Massachusetts and has interests in public policy, international development, censorship and social enterprise. She was a Research Associate at the Harvard Business School and also worked for Apple Inc. as a Management Administrator. She graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in economics and international relations.
Drake Martinet

E. Drake Martinet

Drake came to Stanford by way of the public sector, a physics department and a BA in Political Science from UC Davis. Drake worked as a gubernatorial speechwriter and as a researcher for a U.S. senator. He has also been News Director and General Manager at KDVS 90.3 fm and was an APEC fellow and media director at the Virtual Trade Mission, an NGO associated with the White House Export Council, in 2004. In 2007, he founded the Sustainable Peoples Project, a not-for-profit initiative that focuses on human sustainability issues in harsh environments. In addition to working as a journalist, his interests stretch into developing new technological tools for journalists, media content producers and global consumers. Susanna Montes-Delgado

Susana Montes-Delgado

Born and raised in Colombia, Susana graduated with honors from Stanford in 2009 with a degree in International Relations. During college, she completed an honors thesis on the role of the UNHCR and the case of environmentally displaced persons, conducting part of her research at Oxford University, where she studied abroad. She has interned at Time Inc. in New York, ABC News in Miami, and at the Miami Herald, where she worked as a reporter covering local news. Susana worked as a production assistant for both SBS-MegaTV and Encanta Productions in Florida and as a TV host for a live show at Canal 13 in Colombia.
Miran Pavic

Miran Pavic

Miran graduated with a B.A. degree in Government from Harvard University, where he was the co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Harvard Voice, a weekly campus newspaper. During college, Miran also wrote a number of feature articles for Croatian newspapers and magazines, which is where he's originally from. He was in charge of the news portal Jutarnji.hr this summer, one of the most popular websites in Croatia.
Kathryn Roethel

Kathryn Roethel

Born and raised in Prescott, Arizona, Kathryn earned her bachelor's degree in journalism and political science from Northern Arizona University in 2005. (She spent her final semester eating and photographing her way through Europe and Africa - and studying a little too!) A finalist for the Rhodes and Truman scholarships, Kathryn spent three years penning speeches for Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. Then, seeking a kinder, gentler career, Kathryn became a writer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, later becoming the director of communications for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. She is excited to follow her passion for writing (and escape Midwest winters) by joining Stanford's journalism class of 2010.
Miranda Simon

Miranda Simon

Miranda Simon was born in Argentina but studied her undergraduate degree in the Universidad Iberoamericana un Mexico City with a major in Journalism. While studying in Mexico, she reported in the Culture section at El Universal, a major national newspaper, while contributing regularly for her college newspaper. She has recently produced a documentary on the consecuences of the 2007 flood in the south-eastern Mexican state of Tabasco for a local NGO.
Poornima Weerasekara

Poornima Weerasekara

Poornima kicked off her journalism career in 2005 as a financial reporter for a national english Daily in Sri Lanka called the Daily Mirror, after graduating with a degree in Information Systems. Then she switched to the news features desk, reporting on human rights issues for the past three years including the plight of internally displaced persons, war widows and child soldiers. She has also presented a weekly business program on ETV (a Sri Lankan english news channel) and worked on a post tsunami-economic rehabilitation project, where she helped the revival of small and medium businesses.
