Roseann Cima

Roseann Cima

Roseann Cima is a Stanford graduate, Class of 2011, with a degree in Symbolic Systems with a concentration in Human Computer Interaction. She contributed to the Stanford Daily over the course of her undergraduate career, and wrote as a weekly columnist for a few quarters. She also worked in advertising for the Stanford Daily, designing graphics for print and web. She helped found the Stanford Design Initiative, a community-building and skill-sharing student-group, for which she still blogs. She also freelances as a photographer. She has a keen interest in computational and digital journalism. This past summer she interned with Stanford's Spatial History Project, designing data visualizations. After graduation, Cima will join the San Francisco Chronicle's data visualization and design team.
Elizabeth Clair

Elizabeth Clair

Elizabeth Clair graduated from Stanford in 2011 with a History degree and interests in photography, design, travel, and athletics. She has been employed by STANFORD Magazine, the Stanford Athletic Department, as well as the Pacific Northwest Golf Association, and other publications. As a staff writer and photographer, assignments took her inside the ropes at the US Open, the US Women's Open, and the US Amateur among other tournaments and events. Her work has appeared in STANFORD Magazine, Time Magazine, Golf for Women, the Pacific Northwest Golfer and Southland Golf magazine, in addition to other print and web platforms. She has written extensively about golf, travel, and food.
Marcella De Laurentiis

Marcella De Laurentiis

Marcella earned her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Chicago in 2011. As an undergraduate, Marcella interned for ESPN Radio; the University of Chicago's Center for International Studies; and FOX Chicago News, where she worked in both the Web and Investigative Departments. Over the course of her four years at UChicago, Marcella led hundreds of campus tours and served as the Publications Assistant for Admissions, penning dozens of emails to prospective students. Additionally, Marcella wrote for the Chicago Maroon newspaper and was Co-Editor-in-Chief of MODA Magazine, a fashion magazine that helped redefine UChicago as one of the most fashionable campuses in the nation. She arrives at Stanford with interests in investigative reporting, foreign policy, and the law. After graduation, De Laurentiis will join Chicago TV station WGN.
Emily DeRuy

Emily DeRuy

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Emily graduated with a degree in political science and communication from the University of California, San Diego in June 2010. An avid traveler, she spent her junior year abroad in London where she wrote for The Founder, Royal Holloway's campus newspaper. She hopes to incorporate her love of exploring new places and cultures into her future as a journalist. During a quarter spent interning and studying in Washington, D.C., Emily wrote for CQ Researcher and CQ Global Researcher, both divisions of Congressional Quarterly, interviewing everyone from rapper Flavor Flav to senators. She continues to freelance for several community newspapers, including the La Jolla Light and the San Mateo Daily Journal, where she produced a series on the propositions on California's November 2010 ballot. At Stanford, Emily hopes to acquire the multimedia skills necessary in the fast-paced world of journalism while continuing to improve as a reporter. DeRuy interned at the San Francisco Chronicle during her year at Stanford, and after After graduation, she will join Univision.
Laura Liu He

Laura Liu He

Laura comes to Stanford from China. She was Xinhua News Agency's TV anchor and Chief Business Journalist in Hong Kong, where she travelled around Asia-Pacific covering the world of high finance and investment. She anchored an English business news special for China Xinhua News Network (CNC) and produced video news program. Prior to her news experience in Hong Kong, Laura was based in Beijing as an economics correspondent and English news editor in Xinhua. Meantime, she freelanced for International Herald Leader, China Securities Journal, Economy and Nation Weekly, Global Petrochemical Weekly and the nation's most-widely circulated newspaper Reference News. Laura graduated summa cum laude from University of International Business and Economics, Beijing. She held the permanent qualification of U.S. Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level I.
Eric Johnson

Eric Johnson

Eric Johnson comes to Stanford after graduating with a B.A. in history from Brown in May 2011. At his high school newspaper The Black & White and a summer program at Northwestern, he learned the basics of journalism and resolved to do more in college. His passion for the news and finding the "next step" led him to 95.5 WBRU at Brown. As a member of the Associated Press award-winning radio news team, Eric spearheaded the department's evolution into a web-savvy multimedia presence online. With internships at WTOP in Washington, D.C. and mental_floss magazine under his belt, he hopes to join the search at Stanford for new ways to report and publish the news across all media. Johnson interned with the Wall Street Journal's tech blog, All Things D, during his year at Stanford, and he will continue there after graduation.
Saman Khan

Saman Khan

Born and bred in Pakistan, Saman Ghani Khan earned a bachelors degree in 2007 from Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts with a double major in Political Science and Economics, after which she returned to her hometown in Karachi. She was first exposed to the media during a two-and-a-half year spell at Pakistan's first English news channel, DawnNews Tv. After learning production in feature programming, including documentaries, and being exposed to various dimensions of Pakistani society which were previously unknown to her, she decided to pursue a masters degree in journalism so as to acquire the tool set needed to constructively participate in the recently liberalized Pakistani media. In order to hone her editorial skills and try her hand at print media, Saman joined the most circulated English daily newspaper in Pakistan called The News, which belongs to media giant, Jang Group. This allowed her to diversify her skill set and apart from sub-editing stories filed by other reporters, she had the opportunity to write her own investigative pieces. Armed with experience in both print and broadcast media, Saman is now ready to face the challenge of tackling the ever-evolving world of journalism through Stanford's program and apply these lessons in her professional endeavors back home
Iris Kim

Iris Kim

Iris Kim graduated in 2010 from the University of Pennsylvania with her bachelor's degree in Economics and Communication. Her professional experiences are mainly in the fields of public affairs and public relations. Iris worked as a project intern at Fleishman-Hillard, a global public relations agency, focusing on financial and business-to-consumer communications. She also interned in the PR department of InterContinental Hotel in Seoul, Korea. In the fall of 2010, when South Korea hosted the G20 Summit, she had the opportunity to work in the media center for the G20 Business Summit.
Jessica Parks

Jessica Parks

Jessica Parks spent the last four years as a Los Angeles Times copy editor. Stationed on the Metro desk, she edited articles, blogs, photo galleries and multimedia projects covering raging wildfires, California's perennial budget crises, major obituaries, and numerous state and local elections. She edited much of the Pulitzer Prize-winning series uncovering massive corruption in the small town of Bell. She also captioned and coordinated the multimedia project "Caught in the Crossfire," which won a Pulitzer for feature photography. She helped launch The Times' social media team, was a Headline Writer of the Year in 2008 and served as the copy desk's tech expert. Jessica graduated from USC in 2006 with a B.A. in Print Journalism and worked as a copy editor, page designer, senior news editor and wire editor at the Bay Area News Group before moving to The Times. Parks interned with the Wall Street Journal's tech blog, All Things D, during her year at Stanford, and after graduation she will join the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Arti Patel

Arti Patel

Arti Patel arrives to Stanford University by way of The College of New Jersey where she earned dual degrees in Journalism and Political Science as part of the class of 2011. The New Jersey native has been a working and published writer since the age of 14 when she got her start as a teen reporter for a local newspaper. She has since gone on to intern for a myriad of publications in New Jersey and New York City ranging from media industry newsletters, women and lifestyle magazines, daily newspapers and as a staff writer and editor at her award-winning college paper, "The Signal," throughout her undergraduate years. After graduation, Patel will join Dow Jones Market Watch.
Vignesh Ramachandran

Vignesh Ramachandran

A Littleton, Colo. native, Vignesh comes to Stanford after graduating in 2011 from the University of Colorado at Boulder. During his undergraduate years, he earned a degree in Broadcast News Journalism, a Certificate in International Media and Minors in Business Administration and Political Science. In his first internship at KUSA-TV, his hometown NBC station in Denver, he was able to explore storytelling and discovered a passion for newsroom environments. Becoming no stranger to early hours, Vignesh went to New York City as a Summer 2010 AAJA/NBC News Fellow for NBC's TODAY Show, where he assisted producers with segments and live concerts. A self-professed foodie, he later interned for the High Noon Entertainment-produced show, Food Network Challenge, in Denver. Most recently, he was able to check out the political news scene in Washington D.C., while interning for the Scripps Howard News Service. An avid Twitter-er and technology nut, Vignesh hopes to explore the effective use of social media and mobile technology in news organizations. At Stanford, he also hopes to further refine skills in visual storytelling and explore media entrepreneurship. Ramachandran interned at digital media startup Ongo during his year at Stanford.
David Ruiz

David Ruiz

Born in Pomona, California, David Ruiz is a graduate from the University of California Berkeley, with a Bachelors of Arts in Architecture and a minor in English. During his educational career, David joined the Alpha Delta Phi Literary Fraternity and wrote regularly for its bi-annual publication. He also participated in the American Institute of Architecture Students and co-created an online literary magazine for UC Berkeley students to submit work to, and eventually publish. After college, he reported briefly on emerging Green architecture in the Los Angeles area, and covered the opening of Sony Studios' new, LEED certified Harry and Jack Cohn studios. David wishes to pursue a career path of architectural journalism, hoping to report on the societal and communal impacts that are a consequence of physical changes to rapidly developing landscapes. Ruiz interned at Palo Alto Weekly during his year at Stanford, and after graduation, he will join the Sacramento Bee.
Stephanie Soderborg

Stephanie Soderborg

A San Francisco native, Stephanie Soderborg graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University in 2009. As part of her undergraduate degree, she also studied International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science, while simultaneously working as a legal intern for McAllister Olivarius. Her responsibilities at the law firm included working on the complaint for a major sexual and racial discrimination case, and led Stephanie to realize her writing had the potential to give the disadvantaged a strong, loud voice against injustice. Post graduation, Stephanie worked for the development non-profit Kenan Institute Asia in Bangkok as the English writer, editor and researcher in project management. She published two articles related to Institute projects she was involved in; the first on contextualizing corporate social responsibility and multi-stakeholder approaches to development initiatives in Southeast Asia, the second on the impact of the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement on small and medium sized enterprises. Stephanie plans to pursue her interest in international relations and social justice through her writing at Stanford. Soderborg interned at SF Gate during her year at Stanford, and after graduation, she will join the San Jose Mercury News.
Archer Zhang

Archer Zhang

Born and raised in China, Archer comes to Stanford from City University of Hong Kong where he earned a first-class honors degree in English for Professional Communication. As an undergraduate, Archer first tried his hand at online journalism in the news center of Sohu.com. He then headed to CCTV and interned as a TV reporter covering stories in technology and weather. While continuing on his path to becoming a journalist, Archer has also gained experiences in other areas, including working in the Marketing and Communications Office in AIDS Concern Foundation, a Hong Kong-based NGO, to help organize its annual events. In March 2011, Archer joined Commercial Radio Hong Kong as an intern for a short period of time and covered the National People's Congress, an annual meeting for Chinese lawmakers, with CRHK's Beijing correspondents in the capital city.
